Report: Juanita Bynum beat up by husband

Prophetess Juanita Bynum often speaks to women about healing old wounds. This morning, she is having to heal herself after allegedly being physically assaulted by her estranged husband.


According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Bynum and her husband, the Rev. Thomas W. Weeks III, met in an Atlanta parking lot early Wednesday morning to try to resolve the differences in their marriage.


But around 4 a.m. it got physical, according to the AJC, "until a bellman at the hotel pulled Bynum's husband off her, Officer Ronald Campbell said.


"'She was bruised up and battered," Campbell said. "She had purple bruising around her neck and upper torso.'"


Police say Weeks left the scene and no charges have been filed against him.


The news of a fight between a prominent evangelist and her minister husband will surely cause gasps among the multitude of women who see Bynum as a voice of inspiration, but it also speaks to the reality that women are the victims of domestic violence, no matter how holy and no matter how much money they have.


It pained me to read this story because I can't stand a punk man that puts his hands on a woman. This is one issue that will cause my blood pressure to go up 50 points!


We don't know what led to Bynum and her husband throwing down in the parking lot. We don't know what was said. But that doesn't matter. Unless it is truly self-defense and my life is in danger, there is nothing - NOTHING - that will cause me to haul off and hit a woman. It's better to walk off and regroup later.


It's critical that we confront the massive domestic abuse in our community. We love to overlook this issue by saying, "That's not my business."


I disagree.


When my sister fled to my home in Texas with her daughters, 5 and 2, with nothing but backpacks, then domestic violence was my problem. Nurturing and caring for them became my issue, and that of my family.


See, on the outside, all looks well. On the inside, though, women are living in pure hell.


Our position must be clear: Zero tolerance. Mothers must confront their sons and their anger. Fathers must stop being sperm donors who disrespect women because the son is looking at him and determining that's how women should be treated.


In this case, folks, silence is not golden. It can be deadly.

This is disheartening because as black women we want to look up to people like Prophetess Bynum as a source of strength and power. When domestic violence touches the life of someone who seemed beyond this form of degradation, it is a severe blow to multitudes of black women. This is horrible news.

All I can say is OH My GOD. Is this for real? I find this awesome-I say this because Bynum was on my heart this very morning and by "chance" I decided to change my address on my Essence.com, and I find this. I am So, saddened by this-you have no idea. I shed tears as I try to type. Prophetess Bynum's ministry has directly influenced my life and so many other women, especially the Sister's who believed that love was something unattainable. While the situation is terrible, I see this in a whole different light. Often times we think that Evangelist, Minister's Wives are not going through the mess that we often find ourselves in. But, God is letting us know that none of us are exempted from the perils of life. We need only look to God, who changes not. Just as we as women have drawn strength from the very words from Prophetess Brynum, then maybe God is telling her to draw on the strength, that He has birthed inside of her. While we continue to pray for healing, let us pray for all women that are in these same and similar situations, where we look good on the outside but are tore up on the inside.

What has happened to Prophetess Brynum is sad. But worse still is the lack of voice within the church community to condemn the behaviour of a 'Bishop'.
I wonder what will happen if a state governor so hit his wife in public (I'm not saying it is right even in private), how about a police chief, a president? We know that it could mean the end of their public office! So much that the party they belong as politician, will issue a statement condemning the action. Not so in the church, which is supposed be the foundation and the pillar of truth, setting good example to the world. The silence of the church leaders in such situations means that 'every man is to himself, God for us all' This, to me is counterproductive of the christian teaching we are giving the community. We say something, but cannot defend it with our action. No wonder there is no respect for what we teach. We are so focussed on our own four walls, that we forget that the church is without walls and universal. What affects one affects the others. It makes the very work we do more difficult as people often see us as hypocrites and money grabbers. The church leaders should represent God in their action by first publicly condemning such action from a 'leader' and then step in to save his soul. This is what the Bible teaches on dicipline. Without such a unnanimous action from church leaders, the work of the ministry just becomes a jungle where everyone does what they like. And you know what, the unchurched will step in with the law, and that is a disgrace! Are there no wise men in the church any more?

When I heard the news of this assault, I was in shock I could not believe it, as the wife of a very repectable man of God myself I suffered years of domestic violence, verbal and all kinds of abuse related to jealousy and insecurities on his part, in prayer I felt strongly that the Lord would expose and bring into the open what was going on in my home because I was too ashamed to seek help and I feared that noone would believe me, I also did not want to ruin his name, but one day God exposed him just like He exposed Bishop Weeks, I ended up in hospital like the prophetess and my husband has never touched me again, the shame that all this brought to him drove him to repentance and God has since set him free from violence, this incident too I believe was Gods' way of ending the abuse on the Prophetess' life....exposure...this was probably not the first time he ever raised his hand to her, but it certainly was the last time, So let us rejoice coz the devil has been exposed and he now has to flee. Let us also put all marriages in prayer and come against this assault of the devil on marriages in the wake of whats happening to the prophetess and also the shocking end of the marriage and impeding divorce between Pastor Randy and Paula White.

We must look deep before we leap. Everyone of us comes with a "warning label" and 99 percent of the time we can discern that something is not right with a person and often times we choose overlook a situation and end up on a parking lot floor. I am a whose mother married an abusive man, I can tell you that my mother knew just a I did that he was abusive just from some controlling mannerisms. My mother ignored the small still voices and as a result lived 20 plus years in a terrorized state. When verbal control, and verbal abuse does not prove sufficent for these weak men to feel in control, ultimately , he will lay his hands on you! You know it is real easy to judge. Right now I am just saying to myself this is a marriage that was of God, how could this have happened? When really God is looking and he is showing the world of who is real and who is not. Also that no matter the status or who you are you are still human. When I heard this I thought it was so terrible. It is such a sad thing on both their part. Some may say how can you know if this person is really the one for me, and is totally delivered. I truly believe that Sister Bynum is a Praying woman, but sometimes we still can miss, and there might have been some signs of this abusivness before she married this man, but sometimes what we want blinds our eyes.
