Tavis says no to Michelle Obama speaking at State of the Black Union

Looks like it's either the candidates or no one.

Tavis Smiley, convener of the State of the Black Union on Feb. 23 in New Orleans, has turned down the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama to send Michelle Obama to address those who will gather there.

Sen. Hillary Clinton accepted his invite and will speak, but after several days in which Smiley said he would blast those who didn't attend his event, and then the Obama campaign choosing to keep the candidate fighting for votes in Texas and Ohio, this pretty much brings this issue to a close.

In his commentary today on The Tom Joyner Morning Show, Tavis said that prior to receiving a letter yesterday, he was never "officially" offered Michelle Obama as a surrogate.

But my sources tell me that two individuals VERY close to Tavis discussed Michelle with him, and he told both of them, "No."

So even though he said something different today, he had been asked about Michelle and said no.

We'll try to get the audio link to his comments on TJMS so you can hear for yourself.

Here is a rough transcript of comments Michelle Obama made yesterday on the Michael Baisden Show Wednesday. "MO" is Michelle Obama and "BO" is Barack Obama.

MO: I think that BO and I both have a tremendous amount of respect for Tavis and the work he has done and most people have come to know BO’s life work and advancing the principles and the base of the covenant- and he works to eradicate the opportunity gap and that all kids have education and health care you name it it has been a part of his platform- we believe in what Tavis is doing and people know that we are at a critical juncture – he is in a position that no one could have been anticipated but it is not over- he have spent every minute spending time reaching voters that don’t know him. This race is going to determine the outcome of this entire race and so I am in support of his decision to spend his time trying to reach these voters- I offered to attend the state of the black union- Tavis says that my attendance and participation would be inappropriate and I respect that. But BO has to spend his time becoming the next prez of the US.

BAISDEN: You and I love Tavis for what he has done- what do you need the family to know about the Tavis situation

MO: I think people should know that Tavis has been a friend and his principles are at the heart of who we are- I don’t think anyone can doubt that BO has been working hard at the equity- we are at a point where if BO doesn’t do well in these remaining contests then it will switch right back- we need to make sure that he is spending every second reaching out to voters in texas and ohio. I just got back in town and going back out on Monday and Friday- I haven’t seen BO in a couple weeks but that is what it takes. The fact he has won 8 in a row is a testament to working hard and focused.

BAISDEN: I have known Tavis for years- I am going to try to reach out to him if I can- if you are listening please iron this thing out- I respect you don’t want Michelle to be there- but we have bigger fish to fry.

MO: This is an amazing time in our country’s history and we wouldn’t be here without the work Tavis has done- we have a tremendous amount of respect- I don’t think that anyone would disagree with that, but now that we are here we cant miss this opportunity so what happens in Texas and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will make or break this.

BAISDEN: I believe that everybody understands, I want to thank you for coming on the show.

MO: We love him and respect him- I would love to come to the summit, maybe not this year since it is inappropriate but maybe other years I hope the invitation is open

BAISDEN: Did you realize that you are growing in popularity- you have done a great job in representing this man

MO: Well thank you Michael, I believe in this brother and I believe in us- people have not let us down I am so proud of my country and so proud of my people- we are not there yet look at here, we are almost there.

Question of the Day: Was Tavis Smiley right or wrong to reject Michelle Obama to address the State of the Black Union in place of her husband, Sen. Barack Obama?

Tavis is wrong! This is NOT a DNC sanctioned debate or official candidate forum, but a forum where all voices from the African American Community are supposed to be welcome to discuss issues that matter to us. Michelle is now a prominent member of the community, so why can't she lend her voice? Tavis says otherwise, but there is not a doubt in my mind that if Bill Clinton asked to attend that he would be welcomed!

Does Mr.Smiley realize he is shuning the wife of our next Presidential Elect? Michelle Obama is in every essence just as qualified as former first lady Hillary Clinton to appear in representation of Presidnet Elect Barrack Obama. It appears that Tavis is going off message at a crucial time when Barrack Obama needs to continue to reach out and stay on focus. We are looking for his support here in Texas and need to pull these votes together. It would have probably have been a better idea to hold the State of the Black Union in the state of Texas. This was the last state in which black found out they were free. It would be just as befitting to bring the the address that would capitalize on the black vote and bring out votes to the polls. Just my opinion.

Talk about CLASS!!! I love michelle's response to Tavis snubbing her as Barack's replacement for the event. I beleive maintaining a high road posture by Barack, as it relates to addressing all those trying to derail his campaign, is the best strategy. I am relieved to see that this is shared by his wife as well. yu go girl!!!

I respect Mr. Smiley but I could not disagree with him more on this issue. Barack Obama should continue to stay out and reach for new voters. Quite frankly this is not the time to for this issue. I attended the state of the Black union when it was in Flordia and it is the same today as it was that day. It is up to us the people to change. Mr. Smiley's thought process on this is very short sighted and comes across as someone who thinks he is now bigger than the rest of us. Let's stay on point people we may never see a black man that is on top of his game be in this position in our life time!

Peace

Tavis' insistence on Obama falling in step with his program is counterproductive. I am so disappointed in Tavis right now.

This whole Senator Obama and the State of Black America (SOBA) situation showed our community many things. For one, I think we are TRULY beginning to realize what's important for our community when it comes to empowerment. And two, I think new leadership is rising up with viable solutions. That said, I still respect Tavis and his burden for us as a people. However, I wish SOBA would begin to get "fresh perspectives" for answers to our issues, especially economically (i.e., black businesses produce only four-tenths of 1% of our country's total business revenues, how do we recycle the $1 trillion that blacks spend annually back to our communities, and how do we come together to tap the $300 billion that advertisers spend to promote their products--currently we do not get our fair share of this ad money!). The people in our community that have answers to these issues are the ones that SHOULD be a must-attend panelist for the SOBA event. Maybe one day, this type of leadership will be able to attend and get to some of these vital issues. FOR SOULUTION-ORIENTED PEOPLE, PLEASE VISIT: WWW.FAMDO.COM

Roland, Great job on keeping everyone informed on the facts. I truly respect Tavis and his contributions to our community. I have attend two State of the Black Union symposiums and they were very enlighting, well attend and engaging. That being said they are also very well planned and by that I mean planned in ADVANCE. This event has been planned for quite some time and I would think the invitations to the other panelist were sent well before February 2008. So why now think it's okay to extended and "invitation" to the busiest people in our country at the last minute. Not to mention there are already two debates scheduled one for Feb 21, and the other Feb 26, and now you want them to come to an event on Feb 23. Why were they not invited back in Nov or Dec when this event was being planned. Also, I personally don't think Michelle should have to change her plans to attend either. She has two children at home to look after and her weekends are better spent with them. Come on Tavis Sen. Obama attend your debate back in June in which I also attended, and he was there with the other candidates to discuss the Covenant Issues. Enough said.

So if Hillary couldn't attend do you think He'd have told her that Bill Clinton couldn't come in her place? Either Tavis' ego has gotten to the size of a small planet or this whole thing was an attempt to get Obama on stage with Hillary and have a debate at the SOTBU. One tries not to be a conspiracy theorist, but between this and Julian Bond's letter to Howard Dean, this all looks like the Clintons are calling in markers in an attempt to disrupt Obama's campaign one way or another. I've seen the list of panelist for the STUB. There are quite a few Clinton supporters on both panels. Do you honestly think they wouldn't have ask questions designed to box Obama into answers that would be turned into sound bites and used against him? This story is quickly becoming the talk of the black blogosphere. I think Tavis has done himself irreparable harm this time.

Black America we need to wake up. I heard once that the way the devil intends to start the spirtual warfare that I know everyone has been waiting on or those who can say we are already battle, is to break up the Love, family, marriage, brother against sister, etc. So my people please after you read this do a Prayer and read the word. Because to tell a strong educated black women that I want to talk to your husband and not you is a big sign of the spirtual war. Why do I say this well look at these factors, I am a very busy person and at times my lovely wife has to take on a dual role and I have no problem with her being my proxy because while she will put her own spin own it, she will defintely without question convey my true concerns. Tavis statement says know matter how people try to clean it up, She can not talk for you, This breaks the basic family fundamentals of Honey I know you got my back, it creates tension with there kids because do not take for granted they can not read or understand politics. I respect the single parent but the basic family fundamentals must be taught. For example yes you have a dad but it just us and we are family. And continue to enforce these principles daily not when a social situation arise or crisis arise. Now the pit against Brother and Sister, People it has already happen. Look at the NAACP view, okay I know what some are saying it was Bond personal view on National letterhead. Fall for that if you will but as a child of sharecroppers some one has sold out point blank. Roland please continue to teach and remind all people to do not play us short on our intelligence. We may sit back and watch things but when the spirit call us to fight we will. Give the God sent Man a chance, stop with we need a President who will listen to Black Issues he is coming but we have not had a President who has since JFK or as I close with this final statement. Some say Clinton did okay for Blacks we can debate that issue until we are purple in the face. We stood up for Tavis when BET cut him lose, Yes we did but it is clear Clinton stood up for him also. Peace

Tavis is guilty of bad timing. We all have received invitations to important events that conflict with something more urgent. So I am not mad at the brother for trying to bolster national participation in the State of the Black Union address (SBU). However, Tavis a man known for his profound analysis, it seems illogical that he would expect Senator Obama, in the dead heat of the primaries, to neglect the votes in Ohio and Texas. That is, if Tavis wasn't attempting to sabotage the outcome. That fact that Senator Clinton agreed to attend the SBU after she neglected to thank the folks in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland who voted for her, and after she went ahead to Ohio and Texas means that she only agreed to participate in the SBU after she completed some campaigning. Senator Obama would have more to lose than to gain by his participation in the SBU.

Hello,
Black folks are riding Tavis kinda hard here lately. I caution everyone to remember that Tavis has a right to speak his mind. We are not monolithic and never have been. Obama's campaign while a great thing for the country does not mean that black folks will get everything they hope for from him. Who are his economic advisers, foreign policy advisers, and does he have a real agenda for urban America. This common refrain of discounting race will come back to haunt black people because I assure you that race and racism will not die with the election of Barrack Obama. Hell Roland you are starting most of this mess with your commentary. Remember alot of people are jealous of Tavis Smiley too. So black folks do not lose your damn mind over a presidential election.

Who are Clinton's economic advisors, foreign policy advisors, etc? All you need to know about Barack and his plan for America are at www.barackobama.com. No one is saying that race and racism will magically go away with Barack as president. But don't think that things will be way better with a divisive Clinton. Just look at all the racism coming from her advisors/supporters (Bill Clinton, Gov Rendell, Mark Penn, etc.)

I don't know who at the moment has the worst timing, Julian Bond and the NAACP wanting to seat the MI and FL delegates, or Tavis Smiley, but they both seem to be contributing to the crab in a barrell mentality. I heard Tom Joyner say a few weeks ago that per Eddie Long that the crab in a barrel syndrome was a myth because we are actually trying to lift each other up but it looks like we pulling each other down, (which doesnt make sense even coming from Eddie Long). I think Tom needs to revisit his opinion on that notion because i don't see how this is helping lift Obama up.

Tavis is trying to annoint himself as the next great black leader, i think he's a Roland Martin wannabee in that nobody from CNN or anywhere else is asking him to speak or give commentary and this was his opportunity shine and Obama done went and wrecked it (sarcastic tone).

I disagree with Tavis not only because he seems to have let his egotripping fly in the face of what is good for us as a whole, but also ---if memory serves me---he has invited presidential candidates, Hillary & Bill Clinton, and other politicians to this thing again and again for the last eight years. Tavis doesn't harp on the fact that the Clintons haven't shown up before during his current tantrums.

Tavis misses or willfully ignores the fact that Hillary only agreed to the invitation because she needs to make amends, she needs to force an image that Barack is the black candidate and this state of the union will surely do that, she needs as much free TV time as possible because her campaign is operating on "shoestring" according to Bill, and she needs as many "debates" with Obama as possible to try to trap him into making a campaign-ending mistake. Tavis is getting used and he is being less than honest when he ignores the fact that Bill & Hill have not shown up in previous years despite the many past invitations...but whatever it takes to get his team the win right. Seems like Tavis has selective memory, selective offense, and possibly an overinflated ego compounded with too much envy of the good senator.

I think it is time for chickens to come home to roost. We should not support, campaign on behalf, donate to, or vote for anyone who has failed to represent their constituency in the presidential endorsement process by February 15, 2008. After that time, we should take names, write them down, and kick butts [out of office] in current primaries, November, 2010 and 2012 until we get them all out. Not even the ones who decide to switch over AFTER Obama wins the nomination should be safe. Those not elected should find our support lacking for their future endeavors as well. They are counting on us to forget but we should not. They are counting on us to stick with them despite them not sticking with us. I say save that anger, bottle it, and unleash it in current primaries and again in future elections to replace Black caucus members who chose not represent black interests. I think Al Wynn of Maryland got served on Tuesday. I recommend bringing the chickens home to roost.

We are nearing the end of a long road, hard fought, hopefully, hard won. We are NOT at the end of the presidential primary season. The two remaining candidates are practically neck and neck in popular votes and delegate counts, once you count the pledged superdelegates, and neither one may come out of this with the needed delegates to carry the day. If that is the case, much strategizing and maneuvering will have to take place in order for Barack to carry the day. This is a precarious time. Barack needs to get his message out in Texas, a state whee there is a large Latino population, who are pledged to Hillary Clinton. Mr. Obama's work is not even close to being over. Does Tavis really think that this is the time for Mr. Obama to make a detour? We know what our issues are in Black America. Unfortunately, they haven't changed much in the past decades. There are plenty of well-qualified and able surrogates out there for the task Mr. Smiley asks of Obama: academics, other politicians, activitists, corporate leaders, social scientists, and the like, who will do an outstanding job of analyzing, coalescing, and representing all sides of the community at the State of Black America. I wonder if Tavis realizes in what well-deserved high esteem Mrs. Obama is held all over America, by Americans of all stripes? I am and will remain a great admirer of Tavis Smiley, but I think he is short-sighted on this one. I will chalk this up to his passion in the importance of his message and mission.

Yeah I would say he is wrong... and that is putting it mildly. I have to say this line of action makes me really wonder about his motives. I agree that he would not have responded in the same way had it been BILL coming there in proxy for Hillary.

Im seeing a pattern among a large portion of the black caucus... one that does not take kindly to the fact that Obama is not kneeling and groveling to THEM. They have not "anointed" him and without their support he is at the moment farther along in this race for the Presidency than any other African American has been. I too wish the demographic of the SOBA would change. Im sick of hearing the same people saying the same things over and over again.

Yes folk are coming down on Tavis... but with good reason. When you have a platform it is important to be objective and he has been anything but that lately. When you don't you come across as one-sided and possibly a "hater". To deny Michelle a bid to speak on behalf of her husband while he is in a hotly contested campaign is just ignorant. I thought it was the State of Black America.. not just SOME of Black America.

To "tom friend"... nobody is suggesting otherwise. However, running around at the whim of Tavis and the gang is not by any means the actions a true leader should take. What Obama proposes is equality for ALL Americans not just the black ones. I wouldn't vote for Hillary if she paid me because I just don't trust her. The only way you know what someone will do when given greater power... is look at what they've BEEN doing. Her war vote, her support of Nafta, her "mandated" health care... which... by the way will garnish your wages if for some reason you cannot afford it... her policy switching with the wind... PLEASE. Id be crazy to vote for her.

Mark my words... the days of the current "black caucus" are numbered. Those of us who are coming up and stepping out are of a completely different mindset, and with this trend of bias coming from them... our votes won't be there for them when they need us.

Roland... I enjoy watching you on CNN and Im glad that you can pose these types of questions that don't necessarily go along with the lemming mentality train of thought. There are a LOT of different black folk out here... not just the ones who do most of the talking in front of a camera or on a radio show.

Wow...I've really been impressed with Michelle Obama. She is the true definition of a help mate! She could have turned that interview very negative and would have had every right to do so...but she stayed on the high road. Go Michelle, what an excellent first lady she will be.

I'm really disappointed in Tavis to be so selfish and close minded. I'm also very embarrassed for black America that we have to go through this. I would hate for the main stream media to get a hold of this story...how sad will that look for us.

tsk tsk tsk

I love Tavis, but damn! Sounds like he's a little spoiled. So is he trying to suggest that we should be disappointed in Obama for not accepting the invite. Just because race is the common factor does not obligate our next President of the US to be there.
I really believe Obama has his priorities in order. I know he's constantly under pressure and trying to reassure us(Blacks, Latinos, Poor, middle-class, elderly, children, etc....) that he has not forgot about us. With that being said, it's going to be impoosible for him to please all of us, all the time.
While Hillary is there pouring that watered-down sugar on the Black people she needs to impress, Obama will be out in the trenches putting in work.
Yea that's the kind of President I need!!!!!

I completely respect Tavis. No matter what anyone says, this man truly cares for us as a people and he is going what "HE" thinks is right. No one can fault him for that. I do wish he felt differently about Michelle speaking but respect his decision. It is his right?

Tavis is splitting hairs now. He so much as said that Barack is not the candidate for us but wants him to win him over at a time when basically he has bigger fish to fry. It is obvious that Barack has the support of most african americans and Tavis seems to object to that fact. All of my family and friends has voted and or worked for Barack. We are a diverse social economic group. And he appeals to us all. I know that Tavis has been close to Clintons for some time now and that may be his oppossition. But at this time we need change and HOPE and Barack speaks that message loud and clear whether he shows up in New Orleans or not.

In the words of Julian Bond, I think Tavis "miscalculated" this one.

Also, Tom friend, according to MSN Money, Obama's economic advisors are led by Univ. of Chicago professor Austan Goolsbee and include Jeffrey Liebman and David Cutler of Harvard and Christian and David Romer of the Univ. of Cal., Berkley. He also talks to Warren Buffet frequently. Don't believe the smoke and mirrors that Obama doesn't have "specific" policies. You should check out his web site. Interesting stuff about "green" jobs for disadvantaged youth - he was talking about this before Hillary. Need more specifics? As it relates to drug crimes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle: "The Democrats' clearest differences involve sentencing for drug crimes, including the disparity between terms for crack cocaine offenses, which affect mostly black prisoners, and terms for powder cocaine, which affect mostly whites.
When the Sentencing Commission voted in November to lower sentencing guidelines for crack-related crimes, and bring them closer to sentences for powder cocaine, Obama favored applying the new terms retroactively to current prisoners, while Clinton opposed it, saying the change should affect only future cases. The commission voted for retroactivity in December, allowing 19,500 federal inmates to ask judges for sentence reductions, about two years in most cases.
Clinton has also questioned Obama's proposal to scrap some of the more than 170 federal mandatory-minimum laws, which require judges to impose specified prison sentences, most commonly for drug crimes.
Noting that the laws mostly affect minorities and have had many critics, including the late Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Obama has attacked them as unfair to defendants and unduly restrictive on judges, but he has stopped short of calling for a wholesale repeal. Instead, he promises to review all mandatory minimums and try to eliminate those he considers too harsh." Maybe Tavis should ask Hillary about that at the SBU?

Excellent Job Roland. Tavis just lost his player card people. ALSO FOR BLOGGER "TOM FRIEND". IF YOU DON'T SEE WHAT THIS WAS TURNING INTO YOUR A DAMN FOOL. You must hang out at the mall with Julian Bond and Tavis. You suckers are the crabs that try to hold forward thinking brothers down. THE BIG PROBLEM YOU HAVE IS THAT NOW YOU GUYS KNOW THAT YOU CAN'T FOOL THE OBAMA FAMILY INTO SOME BS FORUM THAT NEEDs TO HEAD IN A NEW DIRECTION. I can't believe the the Clintons pockets run so deep. First Maya Angelo supports Hillary, Now this.. I thought Maya was Miss Black Culture, but I guess Bill got to that too.

As a black woman, I am most offended but Tavis' snub of Michelle Obama, as I am most certaing he would have enthusiastically supported the idea Bill Clinton as Hillary's surrogate. Tavis' actions are certainly speaking louder than his words. Tavis, Julian, members of the black caucus, our memories will not be as short as you think. Thank you, Senator Obama --your candidacy has started a movement in more ways than one.

Roland I enjoy your commentary and your presence on CNN it is refreshing to here the election and other news presented from a black males perspective!!

I am disappointed that we as black folk continue beat up on one another.i.e(The Willie Lynch papers). Tavis is stroking his ego here!! I respect and applaud his efforts to bring the issues we face to the forefront but this is not the time for division.

Michelle Obama is a great representative for Senator Obama, no one knows him better!

It is imperative that Senator Obama continue to campaign here in the Lone Star State and Ohio. An opportunity of a lifetime has presented itself, it may not come again.

Of course HRC is attending the conference, she is in desperate need of votes! If she were ahead she wouldn't be there.

We are working hard here in Texas and looking forward to electing our next President, Barack Obama.

Austin, TX for Obama '08

Tavis position declining Mrs. Obama's offer to stand-in for her husband in a meeting of the Presidential Candidates before the State of the Black Union is actually correct. It must be a discussion between either all of the candidates or all of the appointed surrogates. What is disturbing, however, is Tavis' report that the Obama campaign never contacted him regarding an offer to send Mrs. Obama to speak. Frankly, I find that impossible to believe. While the contact may not have been a personal conversation with Mr. Smiley, I simply cannot believe that the Obama Campaign did not contact and receive a response from Mr. Smiley's staff regarding this issue prior to publishing their letter to Mr. Smiley. After all, the language in the letter and Tavis' own language in rejecting the offer today is essentially verbatim of the Obama Campaign's characterization of Tavis' "purported" response.

Mr. Smiley, I know that you do not intend to address this issue any further, but there is probably somone on your staff who has not been completely forthcoming with you regarding communications with the Obama Campaign.

I work as a conference/event planner. It's completely unorthodox to refuse an invitee's surrogate, at any level...

I can't imagine what type of arrogance would posess Mr. Smiley to say no, we don't want Michelle Obama, one of the most articulate people I've ever seen...

I do not know what Tavis' motive is, but I do know that when Satan knows that ALMIGHTY GOD is about to do something very GOOD for His people, Satan runs ahead and presents GOD's people with a COUNTERFEIT. How smart!

Barack and Michelle are in a difficult position. I pray that they will be strengthened. Concerning REPLACING Barack with Michelle, please allow me to ask this question...Why do people always change their own rules or principles whenever it is not convenient to go by them? Is it all right for two to be ONE now when that was a no-no just a short time ago?
May the WILL of The ALMIGHTY be done.

I am so over Tavis. While I do believe that his intentions are good and he does have the love of black people at heart, he is really on some ego trip. Why should Senator Obama (who is black) have to attend a State of the Black Union event to find out what the black issues are. Hello....he is black, married to a black woman and raising black children. At this crucial time in the election Sen. Obama needs to be doing just what he is doing now. Getting to the people. It has been proven over and over that when he has to time to get to a state and really meet the people and the people meet him, he wins. Texas and Ohio are crucial and I prefer that he be there getting the people excited about voting for him so that in January '09 he will be in a position to make changes for the better for African-Americans and all people of the United States.

Deal with it Tavis. You are not the make or break for black folk.

I think Tavis is very wrong. I have been a supporter of Tavis Smiley since his BET days, and I am very upset about his actions towards our next President and his First Lady. Tavis should realize that the Presidential Campaign is a long hard road. Not one day should be missed getting with voters. I cannot believe that Tavis is acting so childish. Tavis states he will blast Mr Obama for not showing up, well let him.

Hilary is only showing up because she's lost the last 3 states, and this will be her way of trying to sway the black vote. She feels if she shows up at this event and Mr Obama doesn't, she will be victorious. I don't think so. Tavis wanted Mr Obama there so there will be a debate between the two candidates. This is all Hilary wants to do is debate.

Bottom line, Tavis you need to grow up, and accept Mr Obama's regrets and move on.

Facts:

1. Obama is leading the democratic nomination race in delegates and states won. States: Obama 23 Clinton 11 Delegates: Obama- 1139 Clinton -1003

2.This is a critical time for both candidates. All are anicipating whats going to happen in Texas, Ohio and Wisconsin over the next few weeks.

3. Some how, Clinton has found the time to address the black community at the State of the Black Union, despite being the under dog in the race at this point. Texas and Ohio are not a shoe-in, she could have declined based on the focus she too must have in securing votes in these states.

I'm not Tavis hating, I just question why he feels the need to make an issue of Barack not attending HIS event. Tavis stated on the Tom Joyner show this morning that Barack has missed an opportunity to address the needs of black America. And for him not to accept Michelle in Barack's absence, is egotisical. I understand that Tavis is a college drop out; however, he appears to be somewhat educated, given his overly verbose use of expression. Yet, he doesn't seem to COMPREHEND the more important issue of Barack winning the presidential race. How productive is Tavis' event anyways? He invites "black leaders" to TALK about "black issues", and those in attendance leave without any SOLUTIONS. Michelle Obama took the high road in her response on the Michael Baisden show. She should have said what the majority of us are spelling out in these blogs....HELL NO NEGRO HE AINT COMING TO YOUR EVENT!

On another note, Hillary MUST attend Tavis' event to explain why she dismissed Barack's win in Louisianna and to explain why she was a republican and staunch supporter of Senator Goldwater who is infamously known for repressing the Civil Rights Movement. She also needs to explain why her husband, "the first black President" did not send our troops to stop the genocide in Rwanda, yet sent our troops to Kosovo, a European nation, to stop those genocides. So before the limited number of blacks who will actually attend Tavis' event cheer Hillary on, make sure she answers those questions before you cast your vote for her.

When Michelle Obama becomes the First Lady, there will be many events she will have to attend, as a representative for her husband. So, for Tavis to say decline Michelle now means that She should decline him later!

Joy your post makes it clear that you are not as attuned to this election as possible. Clinton has a brand name and name recognition, not to mention the desirable skin color. IN EVERY STATE WHERE THEY HAVE NOT HELD A PRIMARY YET, WHERE SENATOR OBAMA HAS NOT CAMPAIGNED YET, HILLARY HOLDS A MINIMUM 20 POINT LEAD IN THE POLLS. To break it down further for you, because of who she shared a bed with for the last 30 years, Hillary would win every remaining state by a blowout if all campaigning ceased today. Her spouse is also a former president with international appeal and marquee billing. She has a daughter whom everyone in the country knows who herself often draws crowds comparable to Michelle Obama even though she is presumably not adult enough for an interview at age 26. Hillary has a big name campaigning trifecta and Senator Obama only has Michelle who is even much less know than he is for goodness sakes. In other words, your Miss Hillary has that luxury of so-called "found the time". She knows that it is to her advantage to keep Senator Obama from the people because they will vote for her having no knowledge or familiarity with him. She knows that C-span is carried in over 80 million homes and she knows that lots of white people love to tune into the spectacle that is Tavis' State of the Black Union.

For heavens sake, why are there still so many uninformed voters? Barack shouldn't attend the Tavis Yearly Grand Stand and Hillary can keep that 10% of bootlickers as far as I am concerned; Barack Obama is now carrying Black America 90% strong.

I don't agree that she should snub Tavis later. I think she should continue to be the extremely strong and intelligent women that she is and stay on that same high road she took in the interview with Micheal B. I must say I love Tavis to pieces for what he does for us, I know that he most likely has a good reason or two for refusing MO(I can't wait to hear them). However, as a Hugh fan and supporter of him I am terribly disapointed. Michelle was flawless on Larry King. I would vote for her for president.

Wow. It's pretty clear that this makes Tavis look pretty bad. It just makes me wonder if he isn't secretly stumping for Clinton. And I mean that's OK, everyone is free to support which ever candidate they think will be best... but it's a low low low blow to pull the whole "not black enough" attack at a time like this! Tavis Is smart enough to know what issue he's forcing by doing this. And I think the fact that he is forcing this issues shows clearly who he's supporting: Clinton.

And this bothers me since he seems to be feigning some kind of neutrality. Just come out and say it Tavis! It's OK! If you want to endorse Clinton just endorse her-- don't use your show and black issues as a political tool.

Us black folks are way to smart for that. If you think we should vote for her just tell us why. Stop jerking us around!

Nikki and futurebird - Bravo!

I just think Tavis is full of himself. Brother you are big, but you are not that big. Black folks respect this brother, and that respect has rightfully gone to Michelle. DO NOT DISS this sister

Tavis is so full of himself and it is really sickening. Over 6000 people came to UCLA (including me) to hear Michelle Obama speak (with Oprah) as a surrogate for Barack. She is an extraordinary and brilliant woman. She is not a trophy robot wife, she is the TRUTH! To suggest that she is not capable or welcome to speak on Obama's behalf is offensive. Who in the hell does he think he is?

I know everyone feels the need to qualify how much they respect Tavis, but he has lost my respect. He is acting a pompous jerk right now!

Tavis:You are always referring to people who don't have the same point of view as yours as a sell-out, well Black-American now sees your true point of view.

I am more than suprised at Tavis...it almost seems that he is using the old stale "IT'S ABOUT ME---ME---ME. He need to talk to his MAMA...

Tavis is dead wrong. Barack Obama knows that he cannot run as the President of American Blacks, but if he can get elected, then he will set the national agenda. I can't understand these "visible" black people who think they speak for all of us. While I appreciate Tavis's focus on black issues, this latest stunt will do far more harm than good, and he needs to get a grip. As for Julian Bond, he and the NAACP stopped being relevant long ago. Maybe the 2 of them can get together and have nice ball or cotillion or something, and let Obama make history.

Tavis did not insult MO by not having her stand in for her husband. Instead it was vice versa. I just got off of Obama's sight and saw somethings that further cause me to have doubts. Those things are 1) the continued support of Israel, which is the reason we are in this war and will continue to be in it and with others. If you look at that, it shows that Obama is no different than other presidents. i normally don't get caught up in this presidential election stuff, I began to start thinking about voting for Obama, but this snub of the Tavis event under the political excuse of trying to win votes has caused me to retract my decision to support him. There was something else he did also that showed me that he will not really stand up in the office like he is saying. Once again everyones issues are placed before us. Underneath all of this "don't go to the SOBU" is the idea of "we don't want to make whites upset" and cause them to not vote for OB. Still not FREE!

Joy -

You really don't understand politics. Just because he is presently in the lead can change in the next contest. This is not a sprint - this is a very long and vigorous ground game and he cannot be sitting in a room full of Hillary supporters when he has to get in front of the voters. The polls has her up in those March 4th states. Bill Clinton has caused so much damage to their African American vote that Hillary has to go to try and repair the damage that has been done. If you know anything about the Clinton's you would know that if she was winning she would not attend this function.

For those interested in reading or hearing Tavis Smiley's Feb 14th Tom Joyner commentary, please see link below.

http://www.tavistalks.com/feb1408/

Well, I think Tavis is trying to influence the election in favor of the Clinton co-presidency. Anyone knows that Barack must be on the campaign trail to compete with the Clinton machine and she is doing everything in her and Bill's power to take him off the road. Of course, I doubt Tavis will care what I think when he finds out I am a white dude, one not named Clinton. Obama 08

Tavis Smiley has just reminded me of the silly comments he made on national TV after the debate he moderated at Howard University a couple of months ago. He shocked me then by declaring victory for Mrs. Clinton, and going as far as saying negative things about Obama that had nothing to do with the contents of the debate. I think he's running high on an ego trip, and he's clearly losing his mind because he now believes that he's the most important voice in Black America. Tavis is not only wrong in his approach to this issue that he has created himself; he's a real LOSER!

Enough Is Enough…Stop Whining
I think it is far time that Tavis Smiley came back to reality and accepts the fact that he is not the “official spokesperson, amour bearer or self appointed leader of “Black” America. While I take exception to his recent stances regarding Barrack Obama and what is proving to be a highly successful candidacy for the highest office in our land, I must piggyback on something he stated in his commentary on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Travis made it very clear that nether the TLMS, Tom Joyner or Sybil Wilkes speaks for him or his family. As an African American community, we need to ensure that it is just as clear that he (Tavis Smiley) does not “speak for us” as individuals or as a family. Whoever Mr. Smiley chooses to support, uphold or endorse is a matter that is solely up to him. I would urge him to respect and afford that same right to individual Black
Americans and the Black American family he claims to have such high love and regard for. Mr. Smiley’s repeated commentaries are rapidly deteriorating into nothing more than whining over the fact that the candidates (Not just Barrack Obama) have not bowed down and kissed his ring as the self-appointed spokesperson for Black America.

Tavis was disrespectful toward Ms. Obama. Shame on him!

People, don't waste time on the Tavis Smileys of America.
It is the destiny of some Americans to be asleep while the Sun rises and so miss and new and enchanting dawn.

For generations they have been brainwashed to believe that their salvation must come from a particular source; and so they are asleep when 'the bridegroom cometh'. lol

The Clintons enjoy the IMAGINED status of being the 'first Black president'. This means Blacks should be their subordinates.
So it is a 'role of the dice' and a 'fairy tail' for someone assigned as Black in America to dare challenge their queen, Hilary. lol

And see, guys like Tavis Smiley believes that his life can only be better if he subordinates himself to his 'black president' while dissing a Michelle Obama. lol

People, those who recognize the "Change we can believe in" are better off using their time, energy and attention on those who are awake in America at this time. And there are countless of them.
The likes of Tavis Smiley will learn. lol

TAVIS IS WRONG. SO WRONG.

He and Hillary are friends. He had an agenda.

Wow.

Michelle offered to attend on Barack's behalf because of course he is campaigning for the presidency and she was told that was not appropriate. I too beleive Tavis has an agenda. Such a shame...

Tavis may be mad that he has not mobilized the country like OBAMA does...It is amazing to witness such blindness by the person who used to preach us that foundmental change is what we need in America.

Tavis wants to pay back the clinton favor in the time of her deperate moment he is a true frined to the status quo. I am shocked to see the person whom I thought would be with people turns against people.....the young peopel the new generation will win Tavis by by we have enough of you!

I would wonder if Senator Clinton was unable to attend and chose, instead, to be represented by President Clinton, if his attendance would be rejected? Mrs. Obama, I would think, is certainly quite capable enough to represent her husband at this respected event, given the current necessity of his campaign schedule.

Travis,
Are you serious? I use to respect you.

I think Tavis was wrong, I think Mrs. Obama would have been an excellent speaker. She is so inteligent, she will make a super, super first lady.

This is outrageous! I can't believe that Tavis is taking this position, but, then again, he is a protege of Cornel West. And, West addressed this issue last year when he spoke at the SOBA forum--Obama being in Springfield, IL, the home of Lincoln, making his presidential run instead being at the SOBA. Shame on us if we allow a critical time in history to pass us by because we can't see the forest for the trees. I agree with Michelle, Obama is at an important time of the campaign, and if Black folk get mad so be it.
Obama STAY FOCUSED!!! Because as sad as it is, some Black folk don't want to see Obama in the big house. They would prefer he stay in the out house. I meant to say "in his place." Sad, sad, sad.

This is a calculated move between Travis Smiley and the Clinton Camp.Travis I am sure you cannot wait to see another Clinton in the White house so you can ride on Airforce one as you did when Bill was president. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN.This campaign is about dealing with issues for all people .Travis as helped the Clintons to play with us "the black vote" but thank God we are all waking up.Let us not forget the low blow comments to blacks by the Clintons a few days ago.We have followed these so called leaders for years and all they have done conference after conference is sell us their books and tapes. I am tired of it and I am glad Mrs Obama will not be attending, Mrs Obama we need you to continue to be on the campaign trail meeting the people and hearing the issues at hand. This is the moment for America and the president who will unite us all as a people.Travis you are full of it but do what you do because Senator Obama's mission for the people became a momentum and this momentum has already become a MOVEMENT FOR A BETTER AMERICA.

With that said I have to get back to the phone bank.

Tavis stop tripping brother. If you claim you know Barack as long you say, than you know he is for all americans...black,white,brown,etc... As a brother, I'm surprise to see you try to politize this issue during the same time Clinton is trying to divide white, black and brown people. I use to think you were bigger and smarter than that. What matters is the policies he has put forth to help Black Americans and all americans for that matter. Of course, Hillary will accept your invitation now that she know she lost the black vote to her own doings. I'm starting to think you and NAACP have some agenda to bring this powerful unifying brother down. You should be ashame because Barack is running to be the president of United States of America. Keep up the great work you're doing and stop trying to distract Barack from the great work he is doing. Believe it or not nothing will change unless you have a President that not only care about black people issues but are able to mobilize black people...and just in case you're not paying attention he's doing just that.

It is disconcerting to learn that Tavis Smiley has given a resounding "no" to Michelle Obama's request to represent her husband, Barack Obama, at the February 22nd event. I have listened to Tavis' radio and television shows with keen interest in the past; and, I have always thought that Tavis is concerned about the issues that impact African-Americans. If that is so... if, indeed, Tavis is sincere about his sensitivity to African-American issues, I submit that he would be the first person to understand AND excuse/pardon Senator Obama's absence. Where is the sensitivity here? Barack Obama is in a fight... a fight for all of us including Tavis Smiley. I am appalled, saddened, and outraged by his/Tavis' seemingly ego trip. I say to Tavis, "Get over it. It's not about you. It's not about me. It's about the survival of America and the world. Michelle can address any issue with which she is presented quite well; and, she can articulate Senator Obama's positions as it relates to those issues. Tavis, swallow your pride. I once thought you were a larger person than that. Shame on you!

Shame on you Tavis! I respected you and I am now turned off by your self promotion at any cost. You want to promote your event regardless on how it impacts other people. We could beg to differ that if Obama wins, he would have the platform to help all people and to try to pigeonhole him as a Black only president is insulting him. Obama goals are to work for all of us and I admire that in him. Now Michelle was going to come to your event, but her draw would not be big enough for your ego. Get out of the sky my man and help Obama become President stop creating division.

This is what is wrong with Black America.Sometimes we are jealous of each other and sell out for money as Travis has done.Barack has a real chance of winning the nomination and Travis in support of the Clintons wants to take him off message. He needs time to campaign and as soon as he campaigns, people fall in love with him and vote for himI am proud of Michelle Obama. She is very articulate.
Shame on you Travis!
Obama08

Tavis Smiley is making a very hard bed for himself that he will have to lie in. He is going about increasing the visibility of his SOBU in an ill advised manner. It is disappointing to see him pouting like a two year old because Barack Obama “won’t play with me”.

My friends are finally seeing about Tavis Smiley what I have been seeing and pointing out to them for years. He is no worse than many people who promote themselves in the name of looking out for others but we are turning the corner and expect more from people who want to lead. He has no power of his own and should acknowledge and live the truth that his power is derived from people who support him.

Tavis Smiley has an opportunity to do some really great things in his life. Learning some humility might help him make that journey a pleasant and successful one.

the line formed at 5am at the university of md. to see Barack scheduled to speak at 10a.m. Michelle spoke at a local high school at 5pm. i would have loved to see him, but opted for Michelle. I made the right choice. she is awesome. dynamic, funny, speaks to the issues but more important, speaks from her heart. the place was full to capacity. whites, latinos, old, young.
all excited.for Tavis to shun her this way is disgraceful. i am not sure of his motive here, but i will find it hard to forgive him this one.

A true study in contrasts:
Michelle Obama - Humility and Grace
Tavis - Arrogance and Pride.

Evidently, Tavis is carrying water for the Clintons. He is showing himself to be as out of touch with his people as were the older Black Ministers before the South Carolina Primary. Tavis - put your pride in your pocket and listen to the hearts of the people!

Can you believe this? At a time when an African American brotha' has a chance to be PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES another African American is having a fit because the brotha' wont come to his forum! What makes it so bad, he put it under the guise of having a "love for black folks."

Are you kiddin' me. Brothers and Sisters, this is asinine. Tavis Smiley has his own agenda and it is not for the greater good! Even though he may feel that the State of the Black Union is important, Senator Obama is looking to unite our country and if he wins, we win!

We must stay focused. Know that, what Senator and Mrs. Obama are trying to achieve is bigger than us. Let's open our eyes and see the whole picture. It goes beyond Tavis' annual seminar!

Tavis needs to take his oversized ego and sit down somewhere unless he is willing to push Senator Obama's agenda of a unified America rather than his own!

Barack is running for the United States of America for all people.

I can't believe this! How embarrassing. Tavis doesn't represent black America as far as I'm concerned. He clearly has his own agenda and its ugly.

We don't have to worry about another race keeping us down, we do a great job of that already! TAVIS YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!! I had much respect for you at one point, but now....I will never look at you the same. You are by no means a leader!!! Your recent actions have let me know "ITS ALL ABOUT YOU". Not us!

I am profoundly disappointed in Tavis. Barack is leading an amazing movement and it is tragic that Tavis can't get on board. Instead of using his platform to do whatever it takes to restore honor to the White House, Tavis has decided to be the Clinton's house slave. There is, and has always been, one Negro willing to tell massa' how the others are planning their escape. (They's down by the river, massa!). Too bad Tavis is now playing this role. Sometimes we really are our own worst enemies. Shame on him.

Tavis Tavis Tavis. Shame on you. Just know that you do NOT speak for African Americans. Show more respect. People have lost respect for you.

I truly believe that in spite of the fact that Tavis Smiley says that we need a "love language," he has been using anything but that in the last few months of his commentary on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. I believe his ego has been wounded since last year when Senator Obama announced his candidacy on the same day as the State of the Black Union. It is absolutely ridiculous for Mr. Smiley to bellieve that Senator Obama could continue to have his far-reaching appeal if he simply became the candidate for black folks. In order for him to succeed as a president who unites, he has to show that he is impartial and that he is going to support legislature that will benefit ALL people. Perhaps Tavis' goals for black America would go further if he were more inclusive and less exclusive. If we ever want to see change happen, it is going to have to be across the board. Tavis needs to check his ego at the door and practice a little of his "love language" himself. Tuesday and today he came across as petty and childish on the TJMS. He was disrespectful towards the Obamas and he was disrespectful to Mr. Joyner and Sybil Wilkes. What thinking adult would want to sit on a stage and answer questions fielded by such a egotistical man.

John Lewis just endorsed Barack and left Hillary. Even the Black Elder Statesmen are coming around one by one!

Tavis,
You are an arrogant wana-be ancor that does not speak for the rest of America. No one will fault you for backing the Clinton's but don't you try to create a superficial rift between African Americans and the Obama movement.
Barack has much more important things to do like communicating his vision to America than get on your show. When his more than capable wife Michell agreed to attend, you snubed her. How pethetic.
You should of all people understand the urgency and tight schedule that the next President Of The USA might be under.
You are clearely on the wrong side of the "movement". You are missing the boat. It is not too late but it sure isn't looking good for you right now.

OBAMA 08

It is clear that the Clintons are calling in their markers. This type of pressure on select individuals will only increase over the next few weeks. Look at Julian Bond and now Tavis Smiley. If you question the motives of a person's position, as the saying goes, "just follow the money."

Unfortunately, the economic State of the Black Union has actually worsen year by year since 1980. And fortunately for Mr. Tavis, his and all others collective past efforts to significantly improve the economic status of Blacks within the United States will finally start bearing fruit given the election of Barack Obama.

I am confident that Mr. Tavis understands this and accordingly he hopefully will publicly acknowledge for all of us that it is far more important Barack Obama attends to the business of campaigning 24/7 to win in the states of Ohio and Texas than it is for him to attend Mr. Tavis's State of the Black Union Event this year.

And the reality of it is that the same goes for Michelle Obama.

Tavis

You are wrong to ask someone that is in middle of running for presidency to drop their schedule of events just to meet you. Is that how you base someone ability for presidency? What a big ego you have and you need to bring your head back down to size or at least on earth. I will never listen or watch you again. You have disappointed me to the fullest. Don't do us any favors and I wish your show would be cancelled.

Unbelievable! I can't even begin to conceive the notion that Tavis as smart as he is supposed to be could make such an argument.
Sen. Obama is contesting for the most powerful position in the world. This is beyond race. More so, he is running against a candidate who has name recognition. If he wants his voice to be heard he has to be out there campaigning. Sending Mrs. Obama is already hard since she could use that time to stump for her husband or see her kids that she sees less and less.
Clinton, on the other hand, has been campaigning and will have her daughter, Husband(Ex-president!) and name to carry on for her while she is attending Tavis' seminar!
I am black and none of these seminars have benefited me yet. I think rejecting Mrs Obama's acceptance to speak in place of her husband is a slap in the face of any hard working African American Woman. That said I think Tavis is trying to further a personal agenda here. One that is not for the better of the African American community as a whole but just indicates that Tavis is not all that he is cracked up to be. Shameful!

I believe that Tavis Smiley should invite Michelle Obama to speak at the conference. Michelle is a smart intelligent woman who could be the next First Lady of the United States. Any host should be proud to have her as a guest.

My step mom was telling me in Memphis about Tavis being shady on his radio show.
This article confirms it.

He will regret this.

Tavis belongs to the past. I do not even know why Senator Obama is giving him any attention. He has a personal agenda and he is working for another campaign indirectly. Barack Obama is running to become the President of United States of America, he has a broader vision, and Tavis is incapable of understanding this fact. Senator Obama does not need people like Tavis to get his message across to the people. Tavis is one of the many self-acclaimed leaders of the African American community who are in it for their bank accounts. People like Tavis cannot stand Barack because he is a different kind of politician. Tavis' agenda is selfish, personal and narrow. Yes we can and we will, with or without the support of Tavis. Take a hike Tavis, we are done with you and your so-called "State of the Black Union"

Travis, do you understand that you may have said "no" to a future POTUS? Is it reasonable to believe that Barack could afford to spend time preparing for the Summit and neglecting to touch hand with the voters he need to get to the poll? I don't think so.

You still have time, call Michele and extend an invitation for her to substitute for Barack...you'll be glad that you did.

I dont tavis was wrong to decline Michelle Obama's offer, however it seems like tavis contradicted himself. If anyone remembers Tavis' commentary on the TJMS a week ans a half ago, he suggested that perhaps it would be a good idea to have both candidates at the SOBU for yet another debate ( you know let Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama go at it one mo 'gin)

HOWEVER...as Roland stated in a blog previously that it would be A BAD IDEA, and the reasons why being that Senator Obama is killin' em right now and it would be in his best interest to reamin focused in the primaries that lie ahead ( Ohio, Texas ) and not to back up to Louisiana since he won that state, and is addressing the issues in which they will be speaking on at the SOBU, as well as the issues addresed in the Covenant with black america.

Perhaps Sen. Clinton realizes that she stepped in some serious s--- that she cant clean off of her shoes (thanks Bill), and furthemore that whole 'First black President' myth is starting to wear off as black people are starting to open their eyes and see the truth...well maybe not all of us but most of us.

Lastly if Michelle was able to attend the SOBU, all of America would see the truth, and the truth is:
NEITHER SENATOR CLINTON OR HER HUSBAND FME. PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON DONT WANT IT WITH MICHELLE OBAMA (SOUTHSIIIDE CHICAGO WHAT!!?!?????!!!)

Tavis obviously has his own personal agenda. Unfortunately, he will soon regret this behavior. This is not only inappropriate timing, but it is also very evident that he has fallen victim to the Clintons, by allowing them to encourage this type of divisivness. Hopefully, he will come to his senses, sooner rather than later!

TAVIS SMILEY NEEDS TO GET A GRIP! here we have the first black man who has a real shot at the presidency, and tavis is busy throwing a hissy-fit over something like this??? he needs to get on board and support this man with every fiber of his being! as a black woman, i have gradually lost all respect for tavis smiley during this election season. he has consistently tried to throw salt in barack's game, and now he just seems small and insecure. what is his problem? barack is running for president, so in other words THE MAN IS BUSY! it seems clear to all who are paying attention that tavis, sadly, represents the old "establishment" type of mentality that senator obama and his vast supporters are trying desperately to shift away from. THERE IS NO MORE ROOM for haters like tavis smiley in what is rapidly becoming the new america. what a disappointment mr. smiley has proven himself to be.

Tavis,

You're an idiot. What makes you think Obama has time to deal with your irrationalities? The man is running for President of the United States, for crying out loud. His opponent is a sneaky, conniving wench who'll do anything to win---and I mean ANYTHING. So the last thing he needs is to have to deal with nonsense from a peer (YOU). Instead of lifting him up, you've decided to tear him down. Why? Because he wouldn't kiss your silly butt. Tavis, you're the crab with the biggest claw, trying to yank him down to the bottom. People like you are what's wrong with the world. Your ego has blinded you.

Wake up and smell the latte, nudnik!

YOU OWE THE OBAMAS AN APOLOGY!

Michelle Obama is one of the most profoundly intelligent women I have ever heard speak (and yes I have heard Mrs. Clinton speak, she's not even remotely in the same league as Mrs. Obama). I can't imagine what you are thinking Mr. Smiley to turn Michelle Obama's generous offer down. Sometimes I stay up late to watch your show, I shall not do so again.

Thanks, Roland for bringing this to our attention & keeping us updated.

Michelle Obama has nothing but class. Her interview showed what an elegant first lady she is going to be. I’m sure that anyone who has seen her either at the UCLA rally and/or on Larry King are also convinced of the same. I am so happy that Barack declined Mr Tavis’ underhanded invitation. Barack needs to be out there in TX, OH, and PA. He has momentum, but needs to keep it going. This is an attempt to slow it down. WHY? Because just about everywhere Barack goes, he turns people’s opinions to positive. This attempt to keep him away from potential supporters is not lost on many, as we can see by folks who have written here. Smiley’s event will be watched by a small percentage of America. (It’s not even being talked about elsewhere). And if they want to blame Barack for not attending, than let them. Thinking people know what he needs to do. Those black “folk” (as Smiley so annoyingly says) who, for some strange reason want to derail the election of the first black President of the United States really need some type of help. It just shows a kind of smallness. How sad…………..

Yeah for John Lewis & other Super delegates who are taking their vote away from HRC & giving it to Barack!

Bro Tavis,

We are a forgiving people. Please repent and make ammends. Get out the massas' house and come in the fields and work with us for change. This is where the action is.

Tavis,

I WILL NEVER WATCH YOUR SHOW AGAIN !!

SHAME ON YOU.

Tavis,

This is the beginning of your end.

You are a damn Fool!

I have always admired Tavis Smiley for his work in the African American Community and have always considered him a wise man. I believe that he missed the mark this time! Barack should stay focused on going forward with his campaign. The reason Sen Clinton can take time out is because she has been losing...especially the black vote. I believe that she is trying to redeem herself within the black community. Barack has got to appeal to more than the black community...he has to appeal to all American communities...he will be a president for all the people. Tavis should have allowed Michelle Obama to come. A man's wife is always an extension of himself! Tavis needs to do some soul-searching!

I'll bet nothing scared the Clinton/Smiley camp more than the idea of Michelle getting bigger, longer standing ovations than the former First Lady, or even the idea of graceful self-confident but still humble Michelle standing next to Hillary, her antithesis.

Tavis now seems like too many among us, making a good living from talking about the problem and contributing nothing to actually solving it.

I love Michelle, she will be the greatest First Lady we've ever had. Smiley's debt to and expected rewards from Clinton must be enormous, or else he's a real fool, to let a show-stopper like Michelle Obama go when she would've made this year's SOBU historic.

See, this is exactly what Barack meant when he said he had to step back from the self-proclaimed Kings/Queens/Spokespersons for the Oppressed. That's what Cooptation is all about - make a few rich and powerful speaking for the poor, while doing nothing to change the causes.

Time for a change. Get on Barack's website barackobama.com, go to the Action Center, and start calling the good folks of Wyoming and Hawaii until Tuesday. The whole script's there, it's just click and dial and ask, answer questions - it's all provided. Don't complain and forget about it - get one more voter to the polls or the caucus for Barack and Michelle!

After Tuesday, call voters in Texas, Ohio and Vermont. Contest by contest, state by state, let's work hard, powered by faith and hope. Let's show them what we can do.

While folks are pontificating around Sir Smiley, I'll be gettin' worn to the bone, hobbling on my cane over 1,000 miles from home, down in Texas, passing out the biographies of Michelle and Barack in Spanish to thousands of voters, and telling them what a President Obama will be like. In Spanish, of course. And no, I've never done this before, and hell no, I wouldn't do it for Hillary or Bill. I'll never again vote for another Clinton.

Peace/Paz

That is it!!! Here is my message for the Civil Rights generation. "LEAD, FOLLOW OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!" The Civil Rights generation let us down during the 80's; allowing all of the crack and gang violence that nearly wipe out all the black men of Generation X. Now you want to lay claims to success and dreams of those of us who were lucky enough to survive. I will always respect what the Civil Right generation did for us but, I will never bow my head to them. I will make my own way and find a way to live out my own dreams. The Civil Rights generation had their time. This age and this time belongs to my generation. Please, with respect, GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!!!!!

A little retraction on my part here.
In responding to this discussion on another blog outlet i wrote:

Tavis…Tavis…Tavis! And i don’t mean that in the girlish voiced cult kind of tone. I mean it in the tone of: Brother, don’t believe the hype! Even if you are the one who has created the hype. Your past is/has been wonderfully productive. But even you have the right to be wrong in the present. And here you are wrong – clearly very wrong.
Move on to the future; keeping your eyes on the prize.

This was before i heard the voice link for myself. After hearing what Tavis had to say in his own words, i need to retract what i wrote because i understand what his position is; just as i understand the position BO has taken.

Both Brothers are what they are, and i am happy they are sharing the planet and these moments in history with us all.

Peace and Love.......anthony

Are you fricking kiddding me. Tavis is absolutely out of his mind. This man is running for The President of The United States and while he has shown himself & his campaign more than willing to accomodate by sending Michell, his number 1 surrogate, but that's not good enough. I love the fact that Senator Clinton is saying how she will be there - she is like 20 point up in Texas, of course she'll be there. Let's face it - Barck does best when he meets with voters - Hey Tavis, let's not "black" male the man, huh?

Michelle Obama can do a better job at speaking than Hillary Clinton on any given subject. I think it is a shame that she is being treated this way. It will be your loss. Shame!!!!!

Wake up (Black) America ! We can't let trival things like this continue to divide and conquer us. There was a reason HRC challenged BO to so many debates. Didn't Tavis moderate one of the previous (18) debates ? Did he get all hot under the collar when a couple of the Republican candidates refused to attend last year ? We must open our eyes. We must stop being side-tracked by insignificant arguments and discussions. Here we go again.
Remember before the South Carolina primary ? Here's some homework for you. Research HRC's college thesis from 1969 entitled “There Is Only the Fight . . . An Analysis of the Alinsky Model”. I'm told Alinsky was a famous community organizer who's book “Rules for Radicals”, focuses on stirring up the have-nots to demand power from the haves. Alinsky’s tactic – (1) picking a target, (2) freezing it, (3) personalizing it and (4) polarizing it.
WAKE UP (BLACK) AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FWIW I believe that it probably impossible for the forum to be objective with the spouses as stand ins. MO is a "bad" sister -- who I like greatly. However, she does not need to be in forum with Hillary Clinton. Home girl got over with the press when she said she is not sure if she could support Clinton if they were to win the nomination. If she is speaking for BO and makes such a statement, don't think she will get a pass on this again. She can't say I'm just speaking as a wife.

I think BO should just realize that black folk are not all in lock step. And get over it. He has made it clear that he is not coming. Take the hit and move on.

Tavis has lost alot of respect from me. By attacking the Obamas he shows that he is simply a tool of the Clintons. Maybe he should have the State of the Black Union on the Clintons back yard.. Your a phoney.. and a fake. I'll never watch your show again...

So disappointing of Travis. I've supported you show, even though, I find your manner of speaking difficult to listen to. So awkward and fast talking. Clinton attracts the lower half of the amount of brains. Can't we elect up, and someone who is recognized by educated Americans. We just got thru dumming down. What a switch. Why do Americans keep dumming down? Tavis, you could use a little braining up. You may be uncomfortable with Barack...he's a little sharper than your use to.

What a foolish decision on the part of Tavis. Not only is it ridiculous to take Barack off the campaign trail at this moment in time, denying the group the chance to hear Michelle in person is stupid. She is such a talented and moving speaker and would have created a memory of a lifetime for the attendees.

What a great loss of a tremendous opportunity. Dumb decision. Shame on PBS for supporting a man who makes decisions like this.

I believe Tavis Smiley is wrong. I've watched his television show and listened to his radio show for years, and I feel that I've gotten to know this man. I have developed a great deal of respect for him and his work and intellect.

Tavis, do you really mean this? I'm really surprised. As much as I know you,and have supported you, it seems very very unlike you.

It's not too late to invite Michelle. She said she'd be happy to speak if you decide to invite her.

Why not have both, Hillary and Michelle? Now that would be a super star event!!!

Sincerely, Elizabeth in Jersey City, NJ

honestly, I hate to say it but here it is. It is difficult to take anyone serious once they come from BET. As a young African American male who comes from a family of real activists I understand the plot to destroy blacks in this country. And BET has polluted the minds of our children through their videos for years. A positive message is needed. Instead of holding a State of The Black Union Address, where nothing ever comes of it, why doesn't he use his popularity to start a non profit organization to raise money for schools and head start programs in poor neighborhoods. Oh, but I forgot, the modern black spokesperson, only speaks out with a microphone or a video camera. Tavis is a joke.

What a lost opportunity, not to be able to see a potential First Lady and a former one,on stage together.I have heard Michelle deliver Baracks message many times.(tapes and cable)Travis has denied our young black women to gain insight, into how this marriage/partnership is surviving and suceeding at a level never expected in America.I guess he thinks that is not important. But he has Hillary, and we don't want to miss the new "Talk is cheap,I'm the Solution" Clinton stump speak.I am so impressed and proud,to see that our race is no longer accepting an assigned way of thinking. This exites this old black women.I hurt for Michelle, having been dismissed as not acceptable, but that's only because she has surpassed my level of vulnerability.

Wrong! How egotistical can one get. Barack Obama has a campaign to run, and he has to allocate himself and his resources where they will be most useful. Michelle Obama can convey Barack's message just as eloquently as he can himself. She's a woman to be respected, and the fact that he would deny her the opportunity to speak on her husband's behalf is just plain childish.

I agree with Mr. Obama not to attend Mr Travis conference. He has forgotten that Mr Obama is not only getting support from African-Americans but support from all of America black and white.

Glad that Barrack is not attending. This is a trap to make him look like the "black candidate" at the 11th hour.

Mr. Travis is so wrong, I think that he is a pimp of the Clinton machine. And he is being used to discredit Mr. Obama and to polorized this election. Mr. Obama is above that so call "blackness that Mr Travis and the other old civil rights leaders are use to. Mr. Obama represent the future. I appalude his (Mr. Obama) decsion not to attend this conference. Mr. Obama is a potential president of these United States. He needs to be concerned with more than just one race, class or gender of Americans. He is concern about all Americans. So, please Mr. Travis if you want to live in the past do it by yourself. As for the rest of us we are looking forward to change with Mr. Obama.

Tavis Smiley is wrong! Barack needs to campaign in those March 4th states in order to wrap this thing up. Michele Obama is extremely classy and a great representation of the campaign. He is showing his true colors by dissing her.

This is the worse kind of crabs in a barrel behavior, crabs with talking power that run in packs that are impressed by their ability to speak. They find a way out of the barrel and talk talk talk talk talk. They display delusions of grandeur, that solves little. And they just continue talking. Always more talking. Very little production. And the minute the tide brings in a whale that wants to do what the hundreds of talking crabs couldn't get done, these crabs become jealous crabs, fearful crabs, greedy crabs, selfish crabs, and destructive crabs. Crabs willing to attack the whale to keep from being exposed for what they really are, powerless. Tavis Smiley if you are willing to belittle this moment, because you are too small to sacrifice your own need for self importance to participate in a historical event that is greater than yourself, then shame will be your new name.

That jive time turkey said NO to Michelle huh? Well I say NO TO TAVIS. He must be out of his dayum mind. He really must think he's that important because WALMART gave him money to pander to our people for another year.

Listen up! Every panelist that attends should be boycotted. Don't buy their products, don't re-elect them in office and for crying out loud don't let them off the hook.

Tavis, you're about to see what 'black America' is made of. You've gone too far when you disrespected our Sister. She has done more in America than you have done in your kiss Robert Johnson's behind time at BET you foolish little tongue twisted man.

From a Black Woman to a Punk of a man!

Tavis, you are wrong for not allowing Michelle Obama to speak at State of the Black Union. What could it possibly hurt? Is she not in sync with her husband?

It is absolutely unforgiveable that Tavis would refuse to allow Michelle Obama to appear on Barack's behalf at the State of the Black Union.

Even though he has made no qualms hiding the fact that he is a staunch Clinton supporter, fair is fair and to refuse Michelle Obama's offer to stand in for her husband, is blantantly wrong.

I will have to stop watching his show, as a result of this.

By the way, who made him God?

I think Tavis needs to check himself. He has not been appointed or elected ,(unless by self) to represent African-Americans. Tell Tavis to play his role- we the people have BIGGER fish to fry. Tavis Get over it!!!!

If Hillary sent that exact letter to Tavis, requesting Bill because she wants to focus on Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Tavis would have accepted.

Tavis is a Clinton supporter. I would have more respect for him if he would just admit it. In a tight race that she is primed to lose, he wants to re-establish for Hillary some black support, which I think would only come from maybe half of the attendees of the State Of The Black Union.

Blacks across the country have seen the Clinton for who they really are and the Clintons will not regain whatever they thought they had. As a black republican said on a political news show yesterday, Bill Clinton took the "The First Black President" thing to seriously!

The REAL problem that Tavis and many black politicians and leaders have is the non support of Obama in the beginning of this campaign.

Now that Obama is on the verge of winning the Democratic nomination, they find themselv
